Scientists investigate hidden immune battle after womb surgery

NCT ID NCT04484441

Summary

This study aimed to understand why some babies are born prematurely after undergoing surgery in the womb to treat birth defects like spina bifida. Researchers examined blood from 21 mothers and their partners, and placental tissue from babies, to see if the surgery triggers the mother's immune system to react against the fetus. The goal was to learn if this immune reaction might cause early labor, so future treatments could help babies stay in the womb longer.
