Shocking recovery: electrical zaps may help stroke survivors regain arm strength
NCT ID NCT07484854
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding functional electrical stimulation (FES) to arm cycling exercises improves aerobic fitness and arm function in people who had a stroke within the last 6 months. 24 participants will be split into two groups: one doing arm cycling alone, the other doing arm cycling with FES, both alongside standard rehab. The goal is to see if the electrical stimulation provides extra benefits for recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Functional electrical stimulation (FES) combined with upper extremity ergometer training
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective rehabilitation method to improve arm function and fitness after a stroke.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 24 participants, so results may not apply to all stroke patients. The intervention is short-term (10 sessions over 4 weeks), and benefits may be modest or not sustained.
