Iron nanoparticle could light up brain inflammation on MRI

NCT ID NCT02511028

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study looked at whether ferumoxytol, an iron-based contrast agent, can help spot inflammation in the brains of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) using a powerful 7 Tesla MRI. Fourteen participants (some with MS, some healthy) received ferumoxytol and had multiple MRI scans over six months. The goal was to see if the drug causes long-lasting changes on MRI and if it can reveal inflammation better than standard methods.
