Which opioid is kinder to your gut after gallbladder surgery?
NCT ID NCT07182097
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two common opioid pain medicines, fentanyl and remifentanil, given during laparoscopic gallbladder removal. The goal is to see which one allows the bowels to start working again sooner after surgery. About 106 adults having elective gallbladder surgery will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two drugs, and researchers will measure when they first pass gas, have a bowel movement, and how much pain they feel.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fentanyl and remifentanil
What this could lead to
If this trial shows one opioid is better, it could guide anesthesiologists to choose the drug that helps patients recover bowel function faster after gallbladder surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (106 patients) comparing two common drugs, so the results may not apply to all surgeries or patients. The difference between the two drugs may be small or not clinically meaningful.
