New combo therapy aims to tame rare liver disease
NCT ID NCT06755151
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This long-term study is testing whether adding fenofibrate to standard ursodeoxycholic acid is safe for people with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a rare liver disease. About 300 adults who have already completed a prior fenofibrate study will take the combination and be monitored for side effects and liver health. The goal is to see if this combo can be used safely over many years to control the disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Fenofibrate and ursodeoxycholic acid
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safe long-term combination therapy to better control primary biliary cholangitis and reduce liver damage.
What could go wrong
This is an open-label study with no placebo group, so results may be less reliable. Side effects from fenofibrate, such as muscle pain or liver issues, are possible.
