Could a common cholesterol drug help treat a rare liver disease?

NCT ID NCT06591455

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This early-phase study tested whether adding fenofibrate (a cholesterol-lowering drug) to standard treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid improves liver function in 30 adults newly diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic liver disease. The main goal was to see if the combination could normalize alkaline phosphatase levels, a key marker of liver damage. The study was small and exploratory, so results are preliminary and not yet conclusive.
