Gut bacteria swap could ease rare liver disease

NCT ID NCT07477782

First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study tests whether transplanting healthy donor stool into the gut can improve liver function in people with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). About 72 adults with stable IBD and elevated liver enzymes will receive either real fecal transplants or a sham procedure, alongside their usual medication. The main goal is to see if the treatment lowers liver enzyme levels and normalizes bilirubin after 48 weeks.
