Poop pills aim to wipe out superbugs in the gut

NCT ID NCT05981430

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether swallowing capsules containing healthy donor stool can clear carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) from the gut of hospitalized patients. CRE are superbugs that resist many antibiotics and can cause serious infections. The trial will compare the capsules to a placebo in 80 adults at a Hong Kong hospital, measuring how many patients clear the bacteria after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) capsules
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to remove dangerous drug-resistant bacteria from the gut without antibiotics, reducing infection risk.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 participants. The treatment may not clear the bacteria, and there are risks like infection or side effects from the transplant.
