First seen May 04, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study tested a web-based tool to support family members who make medical decisions for critically ill older adults in the ICU. Over 1,000 participants took part, including patients at high risk of death or severe disability, their family surrogates, and ICU doctors. The tool helped families prepare for meetings with the care team by sharing their questions, concerns, and the patient's values. The goal was to improve how well care matches what patients would want and to reduce stress for families.
