Can brain scans and sensory tests unlock the secrets of facial pain?
NCT ID NCT05147454
First seen Sep 08, 2026 · Last updated Sep 09, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study examines people with trigeminal neuralgia and persistent idiopathic facial pain, two conditions that cause chronic facial pain. Researchers will use sensory tests and MRI scans to look for signs of nerve damage and see how they relate to each other. The goal is to better understand what causes these painful conditions and how they affect the nervous system.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Quantitative sensory testing and MRI scans
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could improve understanding of facial pain conditions and guide more targeted treatments.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study with a small number of participants, so findings may not apply to everyone and may not lead directly to new treatments.
