Eye drops during surgery may be unnecessary, new study suggests
NCT ID NCT07562594
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether simply taping the eyelids shut during general anesthesia is enough to protect the cornea, or if adding lubricant eye drops is better. Two hundred adults having non-eye surgery will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods. The main goal is to see how much corneal damage occurs, measured by a special dye test one hour after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Hypoallergenic eyelid taping with or without carboxymethylcellulose lubricant eye drops
What this could lead to
If taping alone works as well as taping plus drops, hospitals could save money and simplify eye care during surgery without harming patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with 200 patients. The results may not apply to longer surgeries or people with existing eye problems.
