Can your own blood or umbilical cord blood ease dry eyes?

NCT ID NCT07551843

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether eye drops made from a patient's own blood or from donated umbilical cord blood can improve dry eye disease. Eighty adults with dry eye from conditions like Sjogren's syndrome or after using glaucoma drops were randomly assigned to one of the two types of drops. Researchers measured tear film stability, tear production, and eye surface damage to see which worked better.

Active substance

eye drops made from the patient's own blood or from umbilical cord blood

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for people with dry eye disease using blood-derived eye drops.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The eye drops are made from blood, which carries a small risk of infection or irritation.
