Exercise plus supplement may rebuild muscle in young transplant survivors

NCT ID NCT05194397

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a tailored exercise program combined with a dietary supplement called nicotinamide riboside (NR) can improve muscle mass, strength, and fitness in adolescents and young adults who had a bone marrow transplant for leukemia or other blood disorders. About 80 participants, aged 10 to 30, will be randomly assigned to receive NR or a placebo, and some will also do intensive exercise. The goal is to see if these interventions can reverse the muscle loss and reduced fitness that often follow transplant.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Nicotinamide Riboside (a vitamin B3-like dietary supplement)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to help young cancer survivors regain lost muscle strength and fitness after a bone marrow transplant.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (80 people) testing a supplement and exercise program. The supplement is not a proven treatment, and results may not apply to everyone.
