Can a walk and a chat beat anxiety in seniors?

NCT ID NCT02690441

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether adding physical exercise to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps older adults with generalized anxiety disorder more than CBT alone. Fifty-three participants will receive either CBT plus exercise, CBT plus a weekly phone call, or just a phone call. The goal is to see if the combination leads to greater symptom reduction and higher remission rates.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Cognitive behavioural therapy and physical exercise
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective treatment for anxiety in older adults, combining therapy with exercise for better symptom relief.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 53 participants, so results may not apply widely. The placebo group receives phone calls, which may not fully control for attention effects.
