New study tests best exercise for lipedema: HIIT vs. moderate cycling with compression

NCT ID NCT07319611

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will compare two types of supervised cycling exercise (high-intensity intervals or moderate continuous cycling) combined with compression therapy against compression plus a home walking program in 69 women with lipedema. The goal is to see which approach best reduces leg swelling, improves walking ability, and eases pain, fatigue, and quality of life. All participants receive 15 sessions of intermittent pneumatic compression over 5 weeks, while the exercise programs last 10 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Intermittent pneumatic compression device and supervised cycling exercise (HIIT or MICT)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could establish a safe, effective exercise program combined with compression therapy to reduce pain, swelling, and improve mobility and quality of life for women with lipedema.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (69 participants) comparing two exercise intensities. Results may not apply to all lipedema patients, and the home-based walking group may show less improvement, limiting conclusions about exercise type.
