Scientists probe whether nerve stimulation works through skin or skull
NCT ID NCT07657260
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study investigates how a gentle electrical current applied to the forehead (trigeminal nerve stimulation) affects the brain and body. Researchers will numb the forehead skin with lidocaine in one session and leave it un-numbed in another, while using fMRI to watch brain activity. By comparing the two sessions, they aim to determine whether the stimulation works by activating nerves in the skin or by passing directly through the skull. The study involves 25 healthy adults aged 18 to 40.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Direct current trigeminal nerve stimulation (DC-eTNS) and topical lidocaine
What this could lead to
If successful, this could clarify how eTNS affects the brain and body, potentially guiding better treatments for conditions like epilepsy, depression, or chronic pain.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not patients. The results may not translate to clinical benefits, and the mechanism may remain unclear.
