Timing of nerve block may cut opioid use in back surgery
NCT ID NCT06933498
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether giving a nerve block (ESPB) before or during lumbar disc surgery better reduces pain and the need for strong painkillers. Sixty adults having back surgery will be split into two groups: one gets the block before surgery, the other during. The goal is to see which timing lowers opioid use, anesthesia needs, and side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
erector spinae plane block (ESPB) with local anesthetic
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that giving the nerve block before surgery reduces pain, opioid use, and side effects better than giving it during surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The block may not work as well as hoped, and there are always risks like infection or allergic reaction.
