New back pain procedure could rival standard steroid shots

NCT ID NCT07445477

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compared two procedures for relieving pain from lumbar spinal stenosis, a common cause of back and leg pain in older adults. One group received a newer technique called erector spinae plane block, while the other got a standard caudal epidural steroid injection. Researchers measured pain, function, and walking ability in 30 adults who had not improved with other treatments. The goal is to see if the newer block works as well or better than the standard injection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

erector spinae plane block (local anesthetic) and caudal epidural steroid injection (corticosteroid)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that erector spinae plane block is a good alternative to steroid injections for managing pain and improving function in people with lumbar spinal stenosis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both procedures are temporary pain relief, not a cure, and individual responses vary.
