New recovery protocol could get kids home sooner after colostomy surgery

NCT ID NCT07206836

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two approaches to care after colostomy reversal in children. One group follows an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol with shorter fasting, no bowel prep, early feeding, and non-opioid pain control. The other receives traditional care with longer fasting, bowel prep, and opioid pain medicine. The goal is to see if ERAS reduces hospital stay. Sixty children aged 2-13 will be randomly assigned to either group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to shorter hospital stays and faster recovery for children undergoing colostomy reversal.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to all children. The ERAS protocol may not significantly improve outcomes over traditional care.
