Eye injection of special cells may reduce corneal swelling

NCT ID NCT05636579

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-stage trial tests the safety of injecting special human cells (EO2002) into the eye to treat corneal swelling. Twelve adults with corneal edema from Fuchs' dystrophy or after cataract surgery will receive multiple injections, with or without Ripasudil eye drops. The main goal is to see if the treatment is safe and tolerable.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

EO2002 (magnetic human corneal endothelial cells) with or without Ripasudil eye drops

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new treatment for corneal swelling that might reduce the need for corneal transplants.

What could go wrong

This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 12 people, so safety and effectiveness are not yet proven. The treatment involves injections into the eye, which carries risks like infection or inflammation.
