Study tests gentler sedative for final hours

NCT ID NCT05085873

Summary

This study compared two medications used to provide deep, peaceful sedation for patients in the final days of life who have severe, untreatable suffering. It tested whether an older drug, sodium oxybate, could provide more stable sedation than the commonly used midazolam, which can cause fluctuating effects. The trial involved 22 patients in a palliative care unit to see which drug was better at maintaining a consistent, comfortable state.
