Quarter-Sized implant could free type 1 diabetes patients from daily insulin
NCT ID NCT07680673
First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026
Summary
This early-stage trial tests a small, soft implant that holds donor insulin-making cells (islets) and protects them from the immune system. The goal is to see if the device is safe and keeps the cells alive and working in adults with type 1 diabetes. Some participants are also on the standard waitlist for islet infusions, while others are not. The implant stays in for about 4 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ENCRT-103-hPI (encapsulated human islet cells in a protective device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could allow people with type 1 diabetes to produce their own insulin without needing lifelong immunosuppression.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 10 participants, so safety and basic function are the main focus. The implant may not produce enough insulin or could cause side effects like scarring or rejection.
