New drug aims to stop Post-Surgery breathing danger

NCT ID NCT06137638

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This Phase 2 trial tests whether the drug ENA-001 can prevent respiratory depression (dangerously slow or shallow breathing) after major surgery under general anesthesia. About 200 adults having elective surgery will receive either ENA-001 or a placebo as an IV drip. The study is double-blind, meaning neither patients nor doctors know who gets the real drug. The main goal is to see if ENA-001 improves carbon dioxide levels in the blood, a key sign of healthy breathing.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ENA-001 (given as an IV infusion)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a new way to prevent dangerous shallow breathing after major surgery, reducing complications and ICU stays.

What could go wrong

This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 200 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may not work better than placebo, and side effects are still being studied.
