EMPOWER study aims to boost breast cancer screening in childhood cancer survivors
NCT ID NCT01579552
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether sending personalized print materials and a follow-up phone call can encourage women who had childhood cancer to get mammograms. Participants are 360 women aged 25-49 who received chest radiation as children and haven't had a mammogram in two years. The goal is to see if this simple approach increases screening rates and helps catch breast cancer early.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
behavioral intervention (mailed tailored print materials and telephone-delivered brief motivational interview)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an effective way to increase breast cancer screening in high-risk childhood cancer survivors, potentially catching cancers earlier.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral study, not a medical treatment, so it won't directly prevent or cure cancer. The results depend on participants' willingness to change behavior, and the study is relatively small (360 women).
