New patch could help doctors measure anesthesia in children
NCT ID NCT06287151
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a non-invasive device that measures muscle activity to see how well nerve blocks work during surgery in children under 5. The device uses sticky patches on the skin to track the effects of spinal or caudal anesthesia. Researchers also looked at how a common additive, clonidine, affects the block. The goal was to gather early data to design larger studies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
BlockSynop surface electromyography device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a better way to monitor anesthesia in children during surgery, potentially improving safety and dosing.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early pilot study with only 80 children. The device is a prototype, and results may not apply to all surgeries or ages.
