Pre-Surgery blood vessel block may boost colon healing

NCT ID NCT03628248

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This small pilot study tested whether blocking the inferior mesenteric artery with tiny particles 3-4 weeks before rectal or sigmoid colon cancer surgery helps the colon develop extra blood vessels. The goal was to see if this improves blood flow and oxygen supply to the colon during surgery. Only 10 adults with rectal or sigmoid colon cancer took part, and the study focused on measuring blood flow and oxygen levels, not on curing the cancer.
