Experimental drug cocktail aims to tame deadly transplant complication
NCT ID NCT06996119
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-phase trial is testing whether adding the drug emapalumab to standard medications can safely prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in 15 adults with leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome receiving a reduced-intensity stem cell transplant. Emapalumab blocks a protein that triggers immune attacks, potentially reducing the risk of donor cells attacking the patient's body. The study focuses on safety and side effects, not yet on long-term effectiveness.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
emapalumab
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a safer way to prevent graft-versus-host disease after stem cell transplants, improving outcomes for leukemia patients.
What could go wrong
This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 15 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The drug combination could cause serious side effects or fail to prevent GVHD.
