New device uses light signals to guide breast cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT06020573
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed early study tested a special clip-on electrode with fiber optics that detects light signals during breast cancer surgery. The goal was to see if the device is safe and can help surgeons identify different tissue types in real time. Twenty-four women with invasive breast cancer took part. The main focus was on safety, with results used to improve the device for future larger studies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Clip-on electrode with fiber optics (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could help surgeons remove breast cancer more accurately, reducing the need for repeat surgeries.
What could go wrong
This is a very early feasibility study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The device is still being tested for safety and performance, not yet proven to improve outcomes.
