Tennis elbow may hide a ligament injury, study suggests

NCT ID NCT07661615

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 17, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study investigates how often people with lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) also have posterolateral rotatory instability, a ligament problem that causes similar pain but requires different treatment. Researchers will check the elbow's lateral collateral ligament during scheduled surgery (arthroscopic or open) in 30 adults who have had persistent elbow pain despite medical treatment. The goal is to better understand the overlap between these conditions and improve diagnosis.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If the link is confirmed, it could improve diagnosis and treatment planning for elbow pain, reducing failed treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, observational study (30 people) that only looks at surgical patients, so results may not apply to everyone with tennis elbow.
