Immune secrets of light therapy for transplant complications revealed

NCT ID NCT03438643

First seen Dec 24, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study looked at how extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) — a treatment that uses light to modify a patient's own blood cells — affects the immune system in people with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), a complication after a stem cell transplant. Researchers planned to treat 8 patients with ECP plus steroids and track immune cell changes. The goal was to understand why ECP works, not to test a cure. The study was terminated early, so results are limited.
