Can a balloon pump help heart patients breathe easier off ECMO?
NCT ID NCT05913622
First seen Jan 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 28 times
Summary
This study tests whether adding an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) to standard VA-ECMO support helps more patients with cardiogenic shock successfully wean off ECMO within 30 days. About 430 adults will be randomly assigned to receive either ECMO alone or ECMO plus IABP. The goal is to improve heart recovery and reduce the need for more advanced heart devices or transplants.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could improve the chances of safely removing ECMO support in patients with severe heart failure, reducing the need for more invasive heart devices or transplants.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage platform trial with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. The intervention itself carries risks like bleeding or vessel damage, and the benefit over standard ECMO alone is not yet proven.
