Life support for kids: study seeks best timing to save lives and preserve quality of life

Summary
This study aims to understand the long-term recovery of children who receive ECMO, a form of life support for severe breathing failure. It will compare outcomes between children who receive ECMO as usual care and those managed with a strict ventilator protocol that uses ECMO only as a last resort. The goal is to learn when starting ECMO leads to the best survival and quality of life one year after leaving the hospital.
