New blood thinning combo could cut ECMO bleeding and clotting risks
NCT ID NCT06676085
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a new way to manage blood thinning in patients on ECMO, a machine that helps the heart and lungs. The goal is to reduce bleeding and clotting problems, which affect over 40% of ECMO patients. Researchers will compare a combination of two blood thinners (nafamostat and heparin) against standard heparin alone in 140 adults with severe respiratory failure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Nafamostat combined with unfractionated heparin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a safer way to manage blood thinning in ECMO patients, reducing dangerous bleeding and clotting events.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 140 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The new method could still cause bleeding or clotting issues.
