Heart scans for staph infections: are they always necessary?

NCT ID NCT06457386

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study looks at whether people with a staph bloodstream infection who have a low VIRSTA score (under 3) can safely skip a heart ultrasound. The VIRSTA score helps predict the risk of a serious heart infection called infective endocarditis. About 700 adults will be randomly assigned to receive or not receive an echocardiogram. The goal is to see if skipping the test leads to similar rates of death or repeat infection.
