Camera pill after negative scope could speed up bleeding diagnosis
NCT ID NCT05108844
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving patients a tiny camera pill (video capsule endoscopy) right after a negative stomach scope can find the source of upper gut bleeding faster than the usual approach. About 70 adults with signs of bleeding but no cause found on initial gastroscopy will be randomly assigned to early capsule or standard care. The goal is to see if this speeds diagnosis, cuts hospital stays, and reduces the number of procedures needed.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
videocapsule endoscopy (a pill-sized camera swallowed to view the small intestine)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could help doctors find the source of bleeding faster and reduce the number of procedures and hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 70 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The capsule may not always find the bleeding source, and there is a small risk of capsule retention or other adverse events.
