Scientists attack blood cancer before it strikes

This study tested whether starting treatment early could prevent a pre-cancerous blood condition called smoldering multiple myeloma from turning into active cancer. It enrolled 55 adults at high risk of progression and gave them a combination of three drugs (carfilzomib, lenalidomide, and dexamethasone) for eight months, followed by a year of maintenance therapy. The main goal was to see if this aggressive early approach could eliminate all detectable traces of the abnormal cells and delay or prevent the onset of full-blown disease.
