Speedy liver transplant selection for alcoholic hepatitis shows promise in large trial
NCT ID NCT01756794
First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 18 times
Summary
This study looked at whether a quick selection process for early liver transplantation could help people with severe alcoholic hepatitis who aren't getting better with medical treatment. Normally, patients must wait 6 months without drinking to qualify, but these patients are very sick and may not survive that long. The study compared alcohol relapse rates in 284 patients who got early transplants to those who had the standard 6-month wait, to see if the faster approach was just as safe.
