Can steroids help cancer patients resume a promising therapy?

NCT ID NCT03847649

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 15, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study has two parts. Part A tests whether cancer patients who stopped a type of immunotherapy (checkpoint inhibitors) due to side effects can safely restart treatment with durvalumab, given alongside the steroid prednisone to reduce the risk of side effects returning. Part B allows patients from previous studies to continue receiving durvalumab, with or without another drug called tremelimumab. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and can help control cancer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
durvalumab (with prednisone or tremelimumab)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a way for cancer patients who had severe side effects from immunotherapy to safely resume treatment and potentially control their disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study, so results may not apply broadly. There is a risk that side effects return or that the cancer does not respond.
