One pill to prevent HIV and pregnancy? new study tests simpler option for women
NCT ID NCT07288190
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a single daily pill that combines HIV prevention (PrEP) and birth control is easier for women to take consistently than taking two separate pills. About 300 women without HIV will try both approaches in a crossover design, and researchers will measure adherence through blood tests. The goal is to see if a simpler regimen improves daily use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
DPP (single pill combining FTC/TDF and ethinyl estradiol/levonorgestrel)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could make it simpler for women to prevent both HIV and pregnancy with just one daily pill.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (Phase 2) with only 300 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It focuses on adherence, not on actual HIV or pregnancy prevention.
