New flexible scope aims to make lung lining diagnosis easier and more accurate
NCT ID NCT07114783
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests a new dual-function semirigid thoracoscope against the standard rigid thoracoscope for diagnosing pleural disease (fluid buildup around the lungs). The new device is designed to be easier to maneuver and potentially less painful while still obtaining large tissue samples. About 92 adults with unexplained pleural effusion will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures to see which provides a clearer diagnosis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dual-function semirigid thoracoscope
What this could lead to
If successful, this new device could offer a more comfortable and easier-to-use tool for diagnosing pleural diseases, potentially matching the accuracy of current methods.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial, and the new device may not prove as effective or safe as the standard rigid thoracoscope in all cases.
