New MRI technique could help surgeons avoid nerve damage

NCT ID NCT02978911

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study uses a special MRI technique called diffusion tensor imaging to map cranial nerves before skull base tumor surgery. Researchers will compare the nerve positions seen on MRI with what surgeons actually find during the operation. The goal is to see if this imaging can help surgeons predict nerve locations and avoid injuring them. The study involves 120 adults with skull base tumors who are scheduled for surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging technique could help surgeons better protect cranial nerves during skull base tumor surgery, potentially reducing post-surgery nerve palsy.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with no direct treatment. The imaging may not accurately predict nerve positions in all cases, and results may not apply to all tumor types.
