Could a blood pressure cuff help your brain after a stroke?

NCT ID NCT07503301

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether repeatedly inflating a blood pressure cuff on the arm (called remote ischemic conditioning) can improve thinking and memory in people who have had a stroke or have small vessel brain disease. Eighty participants will receive the treatment twice daily for 3 months. Researchers will measure changes in brain scans, stroke severity, and cognitive tests to see if this simple, safe technique helps the brain recover.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) using a blood pressure cuff device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, non-drug way to protect the brain and reduce cognitive decline after a stroke.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 people. Results from similar trials have been mixed, and the benefit may be small or not apply to everyone.
