Hidden brain disease study aims to prevent stroke and dementia

NCT ID NCT06878430

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at people aged 65 and older who have signs of brain blood vessel disease on a past scan but no history of stroke, dementia, or other major brain conditions. Researchers will collect information on daily function, thinking skills, speech, and any new vascular events over time. The goal is to find the best ways to follow these individuals, which will help design future trials that could test treatments to reduce the risk of stroke or dementia.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could pave the way for larger trials that test treatments to lower the risk of stroke or dementia in people with hidden brain blood vessel disease.

What could go wrong

This is a very early pilot study with only 100 participants, so it won't directly test any treatment. It focuses on measuring outcomes and feasibility, not on proving a therapy works.
