Physio takeover: could advanced therapists replace doctors for minor ER injuries?
NCT ID NCT07443098
First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 14 times
Summary
This study looked at whether specially trained physiotherapists can safely diagnose and treat non-urgent muscle and joint problems (like back pain or sprains) in the emergency room. 102 adults with these issues were randomly assigned to either a physiotherapist or a resident doctor. Senior doctors then checked if the physiotherapists' decisions matched the standard of care. The goal was to see if this new model could help reduce wait times and free up doctors for more serious cases.
