VA study tests if cutting salt can stop heart failure before it starts

NCT ID NCT03170375

Summary

This study tested whether a specific low-sodium diet could prevent heart failure in Veterans at high risk. Researchers enrolled 71 Veterans with high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome to see if following the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) with reduced salt would improve heart health markers. The goal was to see if this dietary change could stop the damage that leads to a common type of heart failure that currently has no definitive cure.
