Diet showdown: vegan vs. Carb-Restricted for rare liver disease

NCT ID NCT04678219

First seen Mar 22, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tested two different diets—a vegan/low-sulfur diet and the specific carbohydrate diet—in 20 adults with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a rare liver disease. Participants followed their assigned diet for 8 weeks with support from dietitians. The main goal was to see how each diet changed the bacteria in the gut, not to treat the disease directly. This was a small, early-stage study to gather information, not to prove a cure or treatment.
