Could your genes tell you what to eat for lupus? new study tests Low-Gluten diet
NCT ID NCT07183007
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a low-gluten diet, tailored to a person's genetic makeup, can help manage systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Researchers will screen 100 lupus patients for specific genes (HLA-DQ2 or DQ8) and then randomly assign those who test positive to either a low-gluten diet or no special diet. The goal is to see if the diet reduces disease activity and improves quality of life over several months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low gluten diet
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a personalized dietary approach to help manage lupus symptoms and improve quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The diet may not significantly reduce disease activity or improve quality of life.
