Doctors use ultrasound to watch breathing muscle in ICU

NCT ID NCT04319939

Summary

This study aimed to understand how a patient's main breathing muscle, the diaphragm, changes when a breathing machine is set to different modes. Researchers used ultrasound to measure diaphragm thickness in 66 ICU patients on ventilators, comparing machine-controlled breathing to when patients triggered breaths themselves. The goal was to gather basic knowledge to potentially help doctors manage ventilator settings in the future.
