Which anesthetic protects the injured brain better?
NCT ID NCT07244822
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed study tested two different anesthetic drugs—dexmedetomidine and sufentanil—in 28 people having surgery for traumatic brain injury. The goal was to see which one keeps the brain's oxygen levels more stable during and after the operation. Researchers measured oxygen saturation in the brain using a special light-based monitor. The results could help doctors choose the best anesthetic for these critical surgeries.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dexmedetomidine and Sufentanil
What this could lead to
If dexmedetomidine proves better at maintaining brain oxygen levels, it could become a preferred anesthetic for traumatic brain injury surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, completed trial (28 people) that only measures a short-term oxygen level, not long-term recovery or survival. Results may not apply to all TBI patients.
