Could a common steroid make Short-Acting anesthesia last longer for knee surgery?

NCT ID NCT07674576

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving dexamethasone through an IV can make spinal anesthesia with chloroprocaine last longer in adults having knee arthroscopy. Chloroprocaine is a short-acting anesthetic that allows quick recovery, but it only works for about 40 minutes. Researchers want to see if adding dexamethasone can extend the pain-numbing effect without slowing down recovery. The trial involves 60 participants and measures how long it takes for sensation and movement to return after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dexamethasone

What this could lead to

If it works, this could allow longer knee surgeries under spinal anesthesia while still enabling quick recovery and early walking.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants. Dexamethasone may not meaningfully extend anesthesia, and it carries risks like increased blood sugar or infection.
